How to Add Hours and Minutes to a Time in Excel

Calculate delivery ETAs by adding drive times, stop minutes and delays to departure times — including past midnight.

You will learn to

  • Add an h:mm duration to a time
  • Add a number of minutes with TIME
  • Add decimal hours and keep a clock time past midnight

How it works

Times are fractions of a day, so adding an h:mm duration is just =B2+C2. To add a number of minutes, convert it first with TIME(0,minutes,0) or minutes/1440; to add decimal hours, divide by 24. Adding a bare number like 2 would add two whole days.

When the result runs past midnight, the value grows above 1 (a time on the next day). If you need a pure clock time — for sorting, lookups or comparing with another time — wrap the sum in MOD(…,1) to drop the extra day.
