How to Assign Letter Grades with IFS in Excel
Turn final percentages into letter grades with IFS, enforce a minimum exam score, and calculate quality points for a GPA.
You will learn to
- Map a percentage to a letter grade with IFS
- Put an override rule first so it wins
- Return grade points and weight them by credits
How it works
A grading scale is a list of bands checked from the top down, which is exactly how IFS works: =IFS(D2>=90,"A",D2>=80,"B",D2>=70,"C",D2>=60,"D",TRUE,"F"). The final TRUE catches every score below 60.
Override rules go first. If students must score at least 50 on the exam to pass, start with C3<50,"F" so it wins before any percentage band is checked. IFS can also return numbers: grade points (A=4 … F=0) multiplied by the course credits give the quality points used to calculate a GPA.
