How to Average with a Criteria Range Using DAVERAGE in Excel

Use DAVERAGE to average a field for matching records — including numeric conditions like ">40" in the criteria range.

You will learn to

  • Average a field for one condition
  • Average with two AND conditions
  • Use a comparison operator in a criteria cell

How it works

DAVERAGE returns the average of one column for the records that match a criteria range on the sheet. It is the database cousin of AVERAGEIFS, with one big advantage: the conditions sit in cells, so a manager can switch courier or zone without touching a formula.

Criteria cells can hold comparisons as well as text. Type >40 under a Minutes header to pick only deliveries that took more than 40 minutes, then average a different field — such as the customer rating — for those records.
