How to Build a Cell Address with ADDRESS in Excel

Turn row and column numbers into a cell address like $C$9 — and report exactly where a value lives.

You will learn to

  • Build an address from row and column numbers
  • Choose relative or absolute style
  • Report the address of the lowest value in a list

How it works

ADDRESS(row_num, column_num, [abs_num]) returns a cell address as text. =ADDRESS(5,3) returns "$C$5"; an abs_num of 4 returns the relative form "C5". It does not read the cell — it only names it.

That makes it useful for audit notes and messages such as “lowest stock is in $C$9”. Find the row with MATCH (remembering to add the header row), then build the address. Pass the result to INDIRECT if you need the value as well.

=ADDRESS(MATCH(MIN(C2:C10),C2:C10,0)+1,3)
