How to Build a Frequency Distribution with FREQUENCY

FREQUENCY counts how many values fall into each bucket and spills the counts — the data behind any histogram.

You will learn to

  • Build a frequency table with FREQUENCY
  • Pull one bucket’s count with INDEX
  • Find the size of the busiest bucket

How it works

FREQUENCY(data_array, bins_array) counts how many values fall into each bin. Each bin is an upper limit: with bins 25, 50, 75 and 100 you get counts for ≤25, 25–50, 50–75, 75–100 — plus one extra count for everything above 100. The result spills down, one row longer than the bins.

FREQUENCY is the engine behind histograms. Combine it with INDEX to fetch one bucket, or with MAX to find the most crowded range. It ignores blanks and text.
