How to Calculate a Weighted Average Grade in Excel

Calculate a GPA weighted by credit hours with SUMPRODUCT and SUM — and a GPA for a single term.

You will learn to

  • Total quality points with SUMPRODUCT
  • Divide by total credits for a weighted GPA
  • Add a condition for a single-term GPA

How it works

A weighted average gives bigger items more say. In a GPA, a 4-credit course counts more than a 3-credit course, so you multiply each grade by its credits, add the results (the "quality points"), and divide by the total credits: =SUMPRODUCT(B2:B9,C2:C9)/SUM(B2:B9).

A plain AVERAGE of the grades treats every course equally and can be noticeably off when heavier courses have lower or higher grades. To get the GPA for one term only, multiply by a condition inside SUMPRODUCT and divide by SUMIF of that term’s credits.

=SUMPRODUCT(B2:B9,C2:C9)/SUM(B2:B9)
