Calculate hours over 40 — never negative — and overtime pay at time-and-a-half.

How it works

Overtime hours are hours beyond 40, but never negative: =MAX(0,B2-40). Overtime pay is overtime hours × rate × 1.5.

MAX(0, hours−40) keeps overtime from going negative in a short week. Multiply overtime hours by 1.5 times the hourly rate to get overtime pay.
