How to Calculate Per-Column Results with BYCOL in Excel
BYCOL summarises every column of a table with one LAMBDA and spills the answers across a row.
You will learn to
- Total every column with one formula
- Measure the spread in each column
- Return the label of each column’s top performer
How it works
BYCOL(array, LAMBDA(column, calculation)) passes each column of a range to the LAMBDA and spills the results horizontally — one per column. =BYCOL(B2:E6,LAMBDA(c,SUM(c))) totals four months of sales in one cell, and the total row stays in sync if columns are added to a dynamic source.
The LAMBDA can do more than aggregate. Combine INDEX and MATCH inside it to return the label of each column’s best row: =BYCOL(B2:E6,LAMBDA(c,INDEX(A2:A6,MATCH(MAX(c),c,0)))).
=BYCOL(B2:E6,LAMBDA(c,SUM(c)))
