How to Calculate Per-Row Results with BYROW in Excel
BYROW hands each row of a table to a LAMBDA and spills one answer per row — averages, trimmed totals, pass/fail.
You will learn to
- Average every row with one formula
- Drop the highest and lowest score per row
- Return a per-row verdict from several tests
How it works
BYROW(array, LAMBDA(row, calculation)) passes each row of a range to your LAMBDA and spills one result per row. =BYROW(B2:E7,LAMBDA(r,AVERAGE(r))) gives every contestant’s average in a single formula, and it grows automatically if the source is a dynamic range.
Inside the LAMBDA, the row behaves like a small range, so SUM, MAX, MIN, AVERAGE and logical tests all work on it. Your calculation must return one value per row — returning an array causes a #CALC! error.
