How to Calculate Remaining Budget Percentage in Excel
Track how much of a grant or project budget is left, line by line and overall, and spot lines spending faster than the calendar.
You will learn to
- Calculate the percentage of a budget line still available
- Calculate the percentage left across the whole budget
- Count lines spending ahead of the calendar
How it works
Percent of budget remaining is (budget − spent) ÷ budget, or simply 1 − spent ÷ budget. For the whole budget, divide the totals rather than averaging each line’s percentage, so large lines count in proportion to their size.
The number becomes useful when you compare it with the calendar. Seven months into a twelve-month grant, about 42% of the time is left; a line with only 21% of its money left is spending ahead of schedule and may run out early. =SUMPRODUCT(--(1-C2:C7/B2:B7<1-H1/H2)) counts those lines in one go.
