How to Calculate Year-to-Date (YTD) Totals in Excel

Total this year through any month, total the same months last year, and calculate like-for-like YTD growth.

You will learn to

  • Sum this year up to a chosen month
  • Sum the same period last year
  • Calculate year-to-date growth

How it works

A year-to-date total adds every month from January up to the reporting month. With month numbers in a column and the reporting month in a cell, =SUMIF(A2:A13,"<="&H1,D2:D13) gives YTD for any month you choose — change H1 from 6 to 7 and the report rolls forward.

The fair comparison is the same months last year, not the whole of last year: use the same SUMIF on the prior-year column. YTD growth is this year’s YTD ÷ last year’s YTD − 1, a like-for-like figure that isn’t distorted by seasonality.
