How to Capitalize Only the First Letter in Excel
Excel has no sentence-case function. Capitalize just the first letter of a cell — keeping the rest, or lowercasing shouted text.
You will learn to
- Capitalize the first letter and leave the rest unchanged
- Convert ALL-CAPS text to sentence case
- Handle leading spaces before capitalizing
How it works
PROPER capitalizes every word, which is wrong for sentences and descriptions. To capitalize only the first character, split the text in two: =UPPER(LEFT(A2,1))&MID(A2,2,LEN(A2)). LEFT takes the first letter and UPPER capitalizes it; MID returns everything from the second character onwards unchanged — so brand names like "USB-C" stay intact.
If the text is shouted in capitals, lowercase the rest: =UPPER(LEFT(A2,1))&LOWER(MID(A2,2,LEN(A2))). And if the cell might start with spaces, TRIM it first (inside both LEFT and MID), otherwise you would capitalize a space.
=UPPER(LEFT(A2,1))&MID(A2,2,LEN(A2))
