How to Catch Any Error with ISERROR in Excel

Find every #DIV/0!, #N/A and #VALUE! in a report with ISERROR — then hide, replace or count them.

You will learn to

  • Test whether a cell holds any error
  • Show a clean value or a message
  • Count every error in a block of formulas

How it works

ISERROR(value) returns TRUE if the value is any error: #DIV/0!, #N/A, #VALUE!, #REF!, #NAME?, #NUM! or #NULL!. It is the broadest error test in Excel, which makes it ideal for auditing a report: =SUMPRODUCT(--ISERROR(D2:E7)) counts every broken cell in a block.

For display, =IF(ISERROR(D3),"No data",D3) shows a message instead of an error. IFERROR(D3,"No data") is the shorter modern equivalent, but ISERROR is still the right tool when you need the TRUE/FALSE itself — for counting, flagging or conditional formatting.
