How to Choose Rows with CHOOSEROWS in Excel
Pull chosen rows out of a table — by number, from the end with negative numbers, or the row holding the best result.
You will learn to
- Return rows by their position
- Count from the end with negative row numbers
- Return the row that holds the maximum value
How it works
CHOOSEROWS(array, row_num1, [row_num2], …) returns the rows you list, in that order. =CHOOSEROWS(A2:C13,3,7) pulls the 3rd and 7th months of a year-long table side by side for comparison. Negative numbers count from the bottom, so =CHOOSEROWS(B2:C13,-3,-2,-1) always returns the last three rows — the latest quarter.
Row numbers can come from other formulas. =CHOOSEROWS(A2:C13,XMATCH(MAX(B2:B13),B2:B13)) finds where the highest revenue sits and returns that whole row, so the “best month” summary updates itself.
