How to Combine Tables Side by Side with HSTACK in Excel

Build new tables by placing columns side by side — chosen columns, a one-row summary, or looked-up values next to names.

You will learn to

  • Put non-adjacent columns side by side
  • Build a one-row summary from separate calculations
  • Place a looked-up column next to the data

How it works

HSTACK(array1, array2, …) places ranges next to each other and returns a single array. =HSTACK(A2:A9,C2:C9) shows names beside salaries, skipping the department column in between. The result is live, so it updates with the source.

HSTACK also accepts single values and calculations: =HSTACK(SUM(C2:C9),AVERAGE(C2:C9),MAX(C2:C9)) produces a one-row summary. Combine it with XLOOKUP to add a looked-up column beside your data — for example, each employee’s manager from a separate department table — without a helper column.
