How to Convert Binary to Decimal with BIN2DEC in Excel
Decode raw 10-bit temperature sensor readings, including negative two’s-complement values, into real numbers.
You will learn to
- Convert a binary reading to decimal
- Handle negative two’s-complement values
- Scale a decoded reading into real units
How it works
BIN2DEC(number) converts a binary value of up to 10 digits into a decimal number: =BIN2DEC("0000010111") returns 23. Leading zeros are allowed, and the input can be text or a number.
A 10-digit value starting with 1 is read as a negative number in two’s complement: =BIN2DEC("1111110110") returns −10. That is exactly how many sensors and microcontrollers store signed readings, so BIN2DEC can decode raw device logs directly.
