How to Convert Decimal Hours to Hours and Minutes in Excel
Turn 7.75 hours into 7:45: divide by 24 for a time value, write it as "7 h 45 min", and total a week past 24 hours.
You will learn to
- Convert decimal hours to an h:mm time value
- Write decimal hours as hours and minutes text
- Show totals over 24 hours with [h]:mm
How it works
Excel stores time as a fraction of a day, so a number of hours becomes a time value when you divide it by 24: =B2/24 turns 7.75 into 0.3229, which displays as 7:45 with the h:mm format. The 0.75 hours become 45 minutes automatically.
For totals above 24 hours, use the [h]:mm format — the square brackets stop the hours from rolling over into days. =TEXT(SUM(B2:B7)/24,"[h]:mm") shows 41.5 hours as 41:30. To write “7 h 45 min”, combine INT for the hours with ROUND(MOD(B2,1)*60,0) for the minutes.
