How to Convert Hex to Decimal with HEX2DEC in Excel
Decode hexadecimal error codes, memory addresses and a MAC address from a device log into plain numbers.
You will learn to
- Convert a hex code to decimal
- Measure a memory range from hex addresses
- Extract and convert part of a MAC address
How it works
HEX2DEC(number) converts a hexadecimal value of up to 10 characters into a decimal number: =HEX2DEC("1F4") returns 500. Letters can be upper or lower case.
Because the result is a normal number, you can do arithmetic with it — for example, the size of a memory range is HEX2DEC(end) − HEX2DEC(start) + 1. Combine HEX2DEC with text functions such as RIGHT and SUBSTITUTE to decode parts of identifiers like MAC addresses.
