How to Convert Numbers to Roman Numerals in Excel
ROMAN turns numbers into Roman numerals for film credits, chapter headings and festival editions — no lookup table needed.
You will learn to
- Convert a year to Roman numerals
- Build a heading that contains a Roman numeral
- Calculate an edition number and convert it
How it works
ROMAN(number) converts a whole number from 1 to 3999 into classic Roman numerals as text: =ROMAN(2026) returns MMXXVI and =ROMAN(14) returns XIV. Decimals are truncated, 0 returns an empty string, and negative numbers or values above 3999 return #VALUE!.
Because the result is text, you can join it into headings: ="Chapter "&ROMAN(C3). For anniversaries and festivals, calculate the edition number first (year − first year + 1) and then convert it. To go the other way, use ARABIC.
=ROMAN(B2)
