How to Convert Text to Lowercase in Excel

Use LOWER to normalize email addresses and usernames from a newsletter sign-up export so duplicates stop slipping through.

You will learn to

  • Convert text to lowercase with LOWER
  • Build a lowercase username from name parts
  • Compare two values regardless of case

How it works

=LOWER(B2) returns the text in B2 with every capital letter turned into its lowercase version. It is the standard first step when cleaning email addresses, usernames, URLs and tags, because systems usually treat "[email protected]" and "[email protected]" as the same address while a spreadsheet sees two different strings.

LOWER is also handy for comparisons. =LOWER(B2)=LOWER(B6) returns TRUE when two entries match apart from capitalization — a quick way to find sign-ups that were entered twice with different casing.
