How to Convert Text to Uppercase in Excel
Turn mixed-case entries into clean capitals with UPPER — booking references, airport codes and surnames on a flight manifest.
You will learn to
- Convert any text to capitals with UPPER
- Uppercase a value you built by joining cells
- Combine UPPER with LEFT to build a code
How it works
Excel has no "change case" button like Word, so the UPPER function does the job: =UPPER(B2) returns the text in B2 with every letter in capitals. Numbers, spaces and punctuation are left exactly as they are, which makes UPPER safe on codes such as booking references or SKUs.
UPPER works on anything that produces text, so you can wrap it around a joined value: =UPPER(D2&"-"&E2) turns "lhr" and "jfk" into "LHR-JFK" in one step. To replace the original column, copy the formula results and use Paste Special › Values.
