How to Count Non-Empty Cells with COUNTA

COUNTA counts every cell that isn’t empty — names, text, numbers and all. Track sign-ups and form completion with it.

You will learn to

  • Count filled cells in a list with gaps
  • Count entries that mix text and numbers
  • Build a completion rate from two COUNTAs

How it works

COUNTA counts every cell in a range that is not completely empty: text, numbers, dates, TRUE/FALSE, errors — and even formulas that return empty text (""). That makes it the right tool for counting entries in a list, such as sign-ups, responses or filled-in form fields.

COUNT, by contrast, counts only numbers. If phone numbers or IDs are sometimes typed as text, COUNT silently undercounts them. Divide one COUNTA by another to get a completion rate, e.g. =COUNTA(C2:C13)/COUNTA(B2:B13).
