How to Count Numbers with DCOUNT in Excel
Use DCOUNT to count matching records that have a number in a chosen field — perfect for survey response rates.
You will learn to
- Count matching records using a numeric field
- See that DCOUNT skips blanks and text
- Turn two counts into a response rate
How it works
DCOUNT counts the records that match a criteria range, but only where the chosen field contains a number. That detail is useful: point it at a survey-score column and blanks or notes like "Declined" are skipped, so you count only the surveys that came back with a score.
Point it at a column that is always filled, such as a wait time, to count all matching records. Dividing one DCOUNT by the other gives a response rate that updates when you change the criteria cell.
