How to Create a Status Message with IF and Text in Excel
Build readable status lines like "Ana: due Oct 9" by joining IF results with names, percentages and dates.
You will learn to
- Show a percentage inside a sentence
- Join a name with a date-dependent message
- Write a late alert that counts days from an as-of date
How it works
IF can return text, and & joins text together, so you can build full sentences: =B4&": "&IF(C4=1,"complete","due "&TEXT(D4,"mmm d")). Numbers and dates joined with & lose their formatting — a date becomes a serial number like 46304 — so wrap them in TEXT with a format code such as "0%" or "mmm d".
For time-based alerts, compare the due date with an as-of date cell and include the gap in the message: "Maya is 5 days late on Build landing page" is far more useful in a status report than a plain TRUE.
=B4&": "&IF(C4=1,"complete","due "&TEXT(D4,"mmm d"))
