How to Create Clickable Links with HYPERLINK in Excel
Build clickable website and email links from your data, with friendly text — including links driven by a lookup.
You will learn to
- Create a link with friendly display text
- Build an email link from an address with "mailto:"
- Look up both the address and the display text
How it works
HYPERLINK(link_location, [friendly_name]) creates a clickable link. The cell shows friendly_name, and clicking it opens link_location: =HYPERLINK(D2,A2) shows the supplier’s name and opens their website. Leave friendly_name out and the address itself is displayed.
Add "mailto:" in front of an email address to open a new message: =HYPERLINK("mailto:"&C3,"Email "&B3). Because both arguments are formulas, you can build the address and the label with lookups, so a single cell becomes a contact button for whichever supplier is selected.
