How to Extract the Domain from an Email Address in Excel
Pull the domain out of email addresses, normalize it, and flag leads that use free email providers instead of a company domain.
You will learn to
- Extract everything after the @ sign
- Normalize the domain to lowercase
- Classify leads as personal or business with a lookup list
How it works
The domain is everything after the @ sign. In Excel 365 that is simply =TEXTAFTER(B2,"@"); in any version, =RIGHT(B2,LEN(B2)-FIND("@",B2)) does the same. Wrap the result in LOWER, because people type "Acme.COM" and "acme.com" interchangeably.
Domains are great for B2B lead scoring and de-duplication. Keep a small list of free email providers (gmail.com, yahoo.com, outlook.com…) and check the domain against it with MATCH: =IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(domain,list,0)),"Personal","Business"). MATCH ignores case, so the list does not need every capitalization.
