How to Filter with Several Conditions in Excel

Combine FILTER conditions with * for AND and + for OR — then mix both to search listings by area and budget.

You will learn to

  • Require two conditions with *
  • Allow either of two conditions with +
  • Combine OR and AND in one include test

How it works

FILTER has no separate AND/OR arguments; you combine conditions with arithmetic. Multiplying, as in (B2:B11="Riverside")*(C2:C11>=3), keeps rows where both tests are TRUE, because TRUE×TRUE is the only product equal to 1. Adding, as in (B2:B11="Old Town")+(B2:B11="Hillcrest"), keeps rows where either test is TRUE.

Use brackets to mix them: ((area=A)+(area=B))*(price<=budget) keeps homes in either area that are also within budget. The AND() and OR() functions do not work here because they collapse the whole range into a single TRUE or FALSE.

=FILTER(A2:A11,(B2:B11=H1)*(C2:C11>=H2))
