How to Find a Percentile Rank with PERCENTRANK.INC

Turn a score into a percentile rank — “better than 33% of applicants” — with PERCENTRANK.INC.

You will learn to

  • Find the percentile rank of a value in a list
  • Control the decimals with the significance argument
  • Work out the share of values above a cut-off

How it works

PERCENTRANK.INC(array, x) is the reverse of PERCENTILE.INC: instead of “what value sits at the 90th percentile?”, it answers “what percentile is this value?”. The result runs from 0 (the smallest value) to 1 (the largest), so format it as a percentage.

The value doesn’t have to be in the list — Excel interpolates between neighbours. Results are truncated (not rounded) to 3 decimal places unless you set the optional significance argument, e.g. =PERCENTRANK.INC(B2:B11,B4,2).

=PERCENTRANK.INC(B2:B11,B4)
