How to Find a Percentile with PERCENTILE.INC

Find the value below which a given percentage of your data falls — like a website’s p90 load time — with PERCENTILE.INC.

You will learn to

  • Find the 90th percentile of a list
  • Find a low percentile of another measure
  • Take a percentile of a filtered group

How it works

PERCENTILE.INC(array, k) returns the value below which k of the data falls, where k is between 0 and 1. =PERCENTILE.INC(B2:B11,0.9) is the 90th percentile: 90% of values are at or below it. Excel interpolates between neighbouring values, so the result need not be in your list.

Percentiles describe the tail of the data better than an average. Web teams track p90 or p95 page-load times, because an average hides the slow pages real users suffer. INC includes the 0th and 100th percentiles (the min and max); PERCENTILE.EXC excludes them.
