How to Find a Remainder in Excel with MOD
MOD returns what is left over after division β spare seats, leftover items, and minutes past the hour.
You will learn to
- Find the leftover after dividing into groups
- Test whether a number divides evenly
- Turn minutes into hours and minutes
How it works
MOD(number, divisor) returns the remainder after dividing. =MOD(42,12) is 6: four full vans of 12 and 6 guests in a fifth van. A remainder of 0 means the number divides evenly, so =MOD(A2,2)=0 is a classic βis this even?β test.
MOD is also how you split units: =MOD(135,60) is 15, the minutes left after taking out whole hours. In Excel the result takes the sign of the divisor, so =MOD(-7,3) is 2, not -1.
