How to Find the Fiscal Year of a Date in Excel
Assign dates to a July–June fiscal year, number fiscal months, and build "FY2025-26" labels for any start month.
You will learn to
- Calculate a fiscal year that ends in June
- Number months within the fiscal year
- Build a fiscal-year label for any start month
How it works
When a fiscal year starts in July and is named after the year it ends, any date from July onward belongs to next year’s fiscal year: =YEAR(B2)+(MONTH(B2)>=7). The comparison returns TRUE or FALSE, which Excel treats as 1 or 0 in arithmetic.
The fiscal month number (July = 1 … June = 12) is =MOD(MONTH(B2)-7,12)+1. For organisations that name the fiscal year by its starting year, like FY2025-26, subtract 1 when the month is before the start month.
=YEAR(B2)+(MONTH(B2)>=7)
