How to Find the Maximum Record with DMAX in Excel
Use DMAX to find the highest value among matching records — top price per make, or the most-driven car on a budget.
You will learn to
- Find the maximum of a field for one condition
- Find it for two conditions
- Use a numeric condition on a different column
How it works
DMAX returns the largest value in one column among the records that match a criteria range. With Make / Toyota in the criteria range, =DMAX(A1:E13,"Price",G1:G2) returns the most expensive Toyota on the lot, and typing a different make updates it instantly.
Because the condition and the result can be different columns, DMAX answers questions like "what is the highest mileage among cars priced under $20,000?" — put Price / <20000 in the criteria range and ask for the Mileage field.
=DMAX(A1:E13,"Price",G1:G2)
