How to Find the Maximum with Conditions Using MAXIFS

MAXIFS returns the largest value among rows that meet your conditions — the best mark per event, team or region.

You will learn to

  • Find the maximum for one condition
  • Find the maximum with two conditions
  • Compare the best values of two groups

How it works

MAXIFS(max_range, criteria_range1, criteria1, …) returns the largest value in max_range among rows that meet every condition. =MAXIFS(D2:D11,C2:C11,"Long jump") is the best long-jump mark, ignoring shot-put rows entirely.

It replaces the old array formula MAX(IF(...)) and accepts up to 126 condition pairs. If no rows match, MAXIFS returns 0 rather than an error, so check that your criteria really match the data.
