How to Find the Month with the Highest Sales in Excel

Return the best month for revenue, turn it into a ready-made report headline, and find the month with the biggest jump.

You will learn to

  • Return the month with the highest value
  • Build a headline sentence with TEXT
  • Find the month with the biggest increase over the previous month

How it works

To find your best month, look up the month that sits next to the highest value: =INDEX(A2:A13,MATCH(MAX(B2:B13),B2:B13,0)). If column A holds real dates, format the result as "mmmm yyyy" — or wrap it in TEXT(…,"mmmm") to get the month name as text for a dashboard headline.

The biggest month isn’t always the biggest change. Subtracting the column from itself shifted by one row — B3:B13-B2:B12 — gives every month-to-month change at once, and the same INDEX/MATCH/MAX pattern returns the month with the biggest jump.
