How to Find the Most Common Value with MODE.SNGL
Use MODE.SNGL to find the value that appears most often — the shoe size to restock or the rating customers give most.
You will learn to
- Find the most frequent number with MODE.SNGL
- Know when the mode is more useful than the mean
- Count how often the mode occurs
How it works
MODE.SNGL returns the number that occurs most often in a range. =MODE.SNGL(C2:C11) on a list of shoe sizes tells you the size you sell most — something an average (which might be 9.7) can never tell you.
If no number appears more than once, MODE.SNGL returns #N/A; wrap it in IFERROR to show a friendly message. If two or more values tie for most common, use MODE.MULT to list them all. MODE.SNGL works on numbers only — for the most common text value, combine INDEX, MATCH and COUNTIF.
