How to Flip Rows and Columns with TRANSPOSE in Excel
Turn a column into a row, flip a whole table on its side, and lay a looked-up row out vertically — all with live formulas.
You will learn to
- Turn a vertical list into a horizontal one
- Flip a whole table so rows become columns
- Transpose the result of a lookup
How it works
TRANSPOSE(array) returns the array with rows and columns swapped. Type =TRANSPOSE(A2:A7) in one cell and the six regions spill across a row. Unlike Paste Special › Transpose, the formula stays linked: change the source and the flipped copy updates.
TRANSPOSE works on whole tables too — a 7-row × 5-column block comes back as 5 rows × 7 columns — and on the results of other formulas. =TRANSPOSE(XLOOKUP(region,A2:A7,B2:E7)) takes a looked-up row of quarterly figures and lays it out as a column. Make sure the spill area is empty, or you will see #SPILL!.
