How to Format Currency as Text in Excel with DOLLAR

DOLLAR converts a number into currency text with commas and cents — or rounded to hundreds — ready for quotes and summaries.

You will learn to

  • Convert a number to currency text with DOLLAR
  • Round to hundreds with negative decimals
  • Put a currency total inside a sentence

How it works

=DOLLAR(number, [decimals]) returns the number as text in your currency format: =DOLLAR(1850.5) gives "$1,850.50". It is a shortcut for TEXT(number,"$#,##0.00") and is handy whenever a money amount has to sit inside a sentence, an email or a label, because & would otherwise drop the formatting.

The decimals argument controls rounding. Use 0 for whole dollars and a negative number to round to the left of the decimal point: =DOLLAR(4275.25,-2) returns "$4,300". Negative amounts are shown in parentheses, like "($250.00)". The result is text, so keep the original number for calculations.
