How to Round and Format Numbers as Text with FIXED in Excel
FIXED rounds a number and returns it as text with or without commas — ideal for reports and for clean CSV uploads.
You will learn to
- Round to a set number of decimals as text
- Remove thousands separators for an export
- Round to thousands with negative decimals
How it works
=FIXED(number, [decimals], [no_commas]) rounds a number and returns it as text: =FIXED(3.14159,2) gives "3.14" and =FIXED(1234567,0) gives "1,234,567". Set the third argument to TRUE to drop the thousands separators — useful when another system will import the value and would choke on commas.
Like ROUND, FIXED accepts negative decimals to round to the left of the decimal point: =FIXED(1248930,-3) returns "1,249,000". Unlike ROUND, the result is text, so it is meant for labels and exports, not further math.
