How to Get the Day from a Date in Excel
Use DAY to read the day of the month, match bills to paychecks, and spot dates that fall on the last day of a month.
You will learn to
- Extract the day of the month
- Make a decision based on the day
- Detect the last day of a month
How it works
DAY(date) returns the day of the month as a number from 1 to 31. =DAY(B2) gives 17 for 4/17/2026. It is handy for budgeting rules such as “bills due before the 15th come out of the first paycheck”.
A neat trick: a date is the last day of its month when the next day is the 1st, so =DAY(B2+1)=1 returns TRUE for month-end dates — including February 28 or 29 — without any lookup table.
