How to Get the Minutes from a Time in Excel
Read the minutes from clock-in times with MINUTE, flag late arrivals past a grace period, and round to the nearest quarter hour.
You will learn to
- Extract the minutes (0–59) from a time
- Flag clock-ins inside a minute window
- Round a time to the nearest 15 minutes
How it works
MINUTE(time) returns the minutes part of a time as a number from 0 to 59. =MINUTE("8:52 AM") returns 52. It ignores the hour, so it is ideal for rules like “more than 5 minutes past the hour”.
Combine MINUTE with HOUR and TIME to round clock-ins: =TIME(HOUR(B2),ROUND(MINUTE(B2)/15,0)*15,0) rounds to the nearest quarter hour, and TIME rolls 60 minutes into the next hour automatically.
=MINUTE(B2)
