How to Get the Month from a Date in Excel
Use MONTH to pull the month number from a date, flag seasonal sign-ups, and count billing months across years.
You will learn to
- Extract the month number from a date
- Test whether a date falls in a range of months
- Count calendar months between two dates
How it works
MONTH(date) returns the month of a date as a number from 1 (January) to 12 (December). Use it to group transactions by month, test for a season, or feed a month number into another formula.
To count calendar months between two dates, combine YEAR and MONTH: =(YEAR(end)-YEAR(start))*12+MONTH(end)-MONTH(start). Multiplying the year difference by 12 keeps the count right when the dates are in different years.
