How to Get the Month Name from a Date in Excel
Show "June" instead of 6: use TEXT with "mmmm" and "mmm yyyy", and turn a plain month number into its name.
You will learn to
- Return the full month name of a date
- Build a short month-and-year label
- Convert a month number into a month name
How it works
TEXT(date, "mmmm") returns the full month name of a date as text, such as "June". Use "mmm" for the three-letter name ("Jun") and "mmm yyyy" for labels like "Sep 2026" that group neatly in reports.
If you only have a month number (1–12), wrap it in a date first: =TEXT(DATE(2026,G1,1),"mmmm"). The year and day don’t matter — only the month is shown. The result is text, so it can’t be used in date arithmetic.
=TEXT(B2,"mmmm")
