How to Normalize Scores to a 0–100 Scale in Excel

Rescale measures on different scales to 0–100 with min-max normalization, flip a "lower is better" measure, and combine them fairly.

You will learn to

  • Rescale a value to 0–100 with min-max normalization
  • Reverse the scale for a measure where lower is better
  • Combine two normalized scores into one

How it works

Min-max normalization rescales any measure so the lowest value becomes 0 and the highest becomes 100: =(B2-MIN(B$2:B$9))/(MAX(B$2:B$9)-MIN(B$2:B$9))*100. Once a test out of 50 and an interview rating out of 5 are both on a 0–100 scale, you can compare and combine them fairly.

For measures where lower is better — cost, salary ask, delivery time — flip the formula: (MAX − x) ÷ (MAX − MIN) × 100, so the cheapest option scores 100. Keep in mind that the scale is relative to this group: adding a new extreme value changes everyone’s score.

=(B2-MIN(B$2:B$9))/(MAX(B$2:B$9)-MIN(B$2:B$9))*100
