How to Rank Values in Excel with RANK.EQ

Rank scores from best to worst — or worst to best — with RANK.EQ, and break ties so every rank is unique.

You will learn to

  • Rank a value where the highest is 1
  • Rank a value where the lowest is 1
  • Give tied values unique ranks

How it works

RANK.EQ(number, ref, [order]) tells you where a value stands in a list. With order omitted (or 0) the largest value gets rank 1; with order 1 the smallest gets rank 1 — useful for things like complaints, costs or times where low is good.

Tied values share the same rank and the next rank is skipped (1, 2, 2, 4). If you need unique positions, add a running COUNTIF: =RANK.EQ(B6,$B$2:$B$9)+COUNTIF($B$2:B5,B6).

=RANK.EQ(B5,$B$2:$B$9)
