How to Return a Blank Instead of Zero in Excel

Show an empty cell instead of 0 for months with no data, and keep follow-on formulas free of #DIV/0!.

You will learn to

  • Return "" instead of 0 for a calculation
  • Skip a percentage change when either month is missing
  • Keep a total row blank until there is data

How it works

Wrap a calculation in IF and return empty text when the result would be zero: =IF(B2=0,"",B2*C2). The cell looks blank, which makes reports with future or missing months far easier to read than a column of $0.00.

The same idea protects follow-on formulas: =IF(OR(B5=0,B6=0),"",B6/B5-1) skips a percentage change instead of returning #DIV/0!. If you only want to hide zeros visually while keeping them as numbers, a custom number format such as 0;-0;;@ does that without changing any formulas.
