How to Reverse a Condition with NOT in Excel
Flip TRUE to FALSE with NOT — the cleanest way to say "anything except" in a formula.
You will learn to
- Reverse a single test with NOT
- Exclude several values with NOT(OR(…))
- Count rows that fail a TRUE/FALSE column
How it works
NOT turns TRUE into FALSE and FALSE into TRUE. =NOT(B2="Frozen") is TRUE for every status except Frozen. On its own it is the same as B2<>"Frozen", but NOT shines when you want to reverse a whole group of tests: =NOT(OR(B2="Frozen",B2="Cancelled")) is TRUE only when neither status applies.
NOT also works on TRUE/FALSE columns. Inside SUMPRODUCT, NOT(D2:D7) flips every tick box at once, so you can count rows that are not paid, not approved or not complete.
