How to Round Down to a Multiple with FLOOR.MATH
Use FLOOR.MATH to round down to quarter hours, full cases or any step — and measure what the rounding costs.
You will learn to
- Round hours down to the last completed quarter hour
- Use rounded hours in a pay calculation
- Measure the total time removed by rounding
How it works
FLOOR.MATH(number, significance) rounds a number down to the previous multiple of significance. =FLOOR.MATH(3.4,0.25) returns 3.25, so a payroll rule of "completed quarter hours only" becomes one short formula. With no significance it rounds down to a whole number.
For negative numbers FLOOR.MATH rounds away from zero by default (-4.5 becomes -5); set mode to 1 to round toward zero. Whenever you round in one direction, it is worth measuring how much the rule removes in total, because small cuts per person add up across a team.
=FLOOR.MATH(B2,0.25)
