How to Round Down in Excel with ROUNDDOWN
Drop the fraction with ROUNDDOWN — for loyalty points, payouts in whole cents and anything you must never over-award.
You will learn to
- Round a value down to a whole number
- Round a calculated result down
- Round down to two decimals for cash payouts
How it works
ROUNDDOWN(number, num_digits) cuts a number toward zero at the precision you choose. =ROUNDDOWN(184.75,0) returns 184, and =ROUNDDOWN(31.0332,2) returns 31.03. It never rounds up, which makes it the safe choice for points, rebates and payouts you must not over-award.
Round the final result, not the inputs: =ROUNDDOWN(B2*C2,0) multiplies first and then drops the fraction. Rounding each input first can give a noticeably different answer.
=ROUNDDOWN(B2*C2,0)
