How to Round Up in Excel with ROUNDUP

Always round away from zero with ROUNDUP — for billable weights, safety margins and capacity bookings.

You will learn to

  • Round a value up to a whole number
  • Use a rounded-up value inside a calculation
  • Round up to the next 10 with negative digits

How it works

ROUNDUP(number, num_digits) always moves a number away from zero, no matter how small the fraction. =ROUNDUP(2.3,0) returns 3, which is exactly how couriers, phone plans and parking meters bill: any part of a unit counts as a whole unit.

The second argument sets the precision. Use 0 for whole numbers, 1 or 2 for decimals, and negative numbers to round to tens (-1), hundreds (-2) or thousands (-3). Because ROUNDUP changes the stored value (not just the display), totals built on it match what you actually charge.
