How to Split a Bill Evenly to the Cent in Excel

Split a restaurant bill fairly: round the total to cents, give everyone the same share, and assign the leftover pennies.

You will learn to

  • Total a bill with tax and tip, rounded to the cent
  • Calculate an equal share that never overcharges
  • Count the people who pay one extra cent

How it works

Dividing a bill by the number of people rarely gives whole cents: $207.52 ÷ 7 is $29.6457…. If everyone pays the rounded share ($29.65) the group overpays; if everyone pays $29.64 the restaurant is 4 cents short. The fair method is to give everyone the rounded-down share and have a few people pay one extra cent.

Work in whole cents to find how many: =MOD(ROUND(total*100,0),people) is the number of leftover cents, and so the number of people who pay one cent more. Rounding the total to cents first (with ROUND) avoids tiny floating-point fractions creeping into the remainder.

=MOD(ROUND(B2*(1+B3+B4)*100,0),B5)
